100 Soldiers Dead

It was my birthday. We were early for the movie so we grabbed a coffee. While sipping my drink I glanced at the day's newspaper. Three soldiers had been killed, "100 Soldiers Dead" read the headline.

In black and white newsprint, the photos could have been from another time. But these are not the soldier boys of yesteryear, they were the faces of men. Career soldiers fighting a war that had gone on longer than World War 2. A war with no impact on my life.

Three soldiers died on my birthday and it hadn't changed a thing.

Made in December 2008.

Training A Fool Is Not a Joke, apparently.

Commissioned as part of Re-Live Vancouver the film loop Training A Fool Is Not A Joke will be shown as a video installation in the street window of Satellite Gallery at 560 Seymour St. (aka the old A&B Sound building) from September 9th to October 22nd.

Re-Live Vancouver is an art show where emerging Vancouver artists were invited to make a piece inspired by the work of one of Vancouver's established artists. For Fool, filmmaker Brian Lye created a loop inspired by the Rodney Graham piece Vexation Island (1997).

Terminal Cinema II Post-Motem

With seating for 24, we packed 40 unpaid customers into the micro-cinema at the Cineworks Annex for the highly anticpated event Terminal Cinema II. The after party went past midnight as attending filmmakers: cj brabant, Brian Lye and John Woods met with the audience and discussed their projects.

Many thanks to all who volunteered!
